Over the past few years, Dr. Jeong (UA Engineering) has developed a non-invasive sensor system embedded in normal athletic shoes to track gait patterns and balance. I have worked as a rehabilitation nurse practitioner for the past 10 years and am also a faculty member of the Capstone College of Nursing, and I joined his team around a year and half ago to help offer a healthcare specialist perspective and recruit for the study. We have completed preliminary data and are ready to recruit healthy older adult volunteers for our study. I am reaching out to local NPs in the West AL Nurse Practitioners in February 2025 to see any provider is willing to display our flyer in their clinic or spread the word about our study. We will take care of all enrollment aspects. All client volunteers would need to do is where our shoe and perform a few specific moves (timed up and go test, 30s chair stand, 4-stage balance test, and walking) with our instruction and assistance transmitted data wirelessly. It would only take 1.5 hours of their time (which they would be compensated for). Our hope is to improve fall risk evaluation in real-time (think about it as more gait specific smart watches) with the aim of keeping older adults safely at home for a longer period.
Please let me know if you are willing to help with our study information in February.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
